 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Muddy, but not bad, parking lot. Can accommodate several vehicles, but you can't always park close to your neighbor to make room for others, because some spots have trees making it difficult for larger vehicles to pull in enough so that their tails aren't hanging on the road. Don't drive beyond this point, private roads. |

 | Surface Conditions: |
Wet Trail, Ice - Breakable Crust, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Very easy tiny tributaries. One bridged (right before the shelter) |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
One large blowdown with several branches, nicknamed a "geezer trap" by a small group of older hikers ("Old age ain't no place for sissies")
. Nice clean-up of previous blowdowns noticed. Thank you! |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
I've seen fewer at the local shelter when it is at full capacity! A few really vocal, but all great and well-behaved. Their people were great, too! No one left any $%^& bags on the side of the trail or in the parking lot. These dogs were a joy to be around and if your dog loves water, this is a great place. |
|
 | Bugs: |
None. |
|
 | Lost and Found: |
1939 - "The Stray Lady" lost and found. Look up "Bette Davis" if you don't know the story. 2022 - a navy hat was hanging on a branch a little ways up. We left it there. Glasses on the trail sign at the beginning. |

"Life is the past, the present and the perhaps." Went to the falls 20 years ago, went to today to see it in early spring, and perhaps we'll return. Good choice for early spring, snow was gone from sunny areas. I checked off traction, even though our spikes went for the ride, plenty of ice once you cross the bridge right before the shelter. You may need to "Fasten your traction, it's going to be a bumpy hike," near the falls.
A good portion of the falls is open and running, but still a lot of lovely ice formations to the sides. Shelter was being used by some weekend backpackers who were having a fantastic weekend.
Did not find the "Keeper of Stray Ladies" plaque, but did not really look that hard for it. Checked out some of the nameless paths off of the trail on the way back to the car. I believe they may be part of the Franconia Inn's network of snowshoe and cross country trails.
This would be a good one for kids, dogs, water-lovers, folks looking for something that won't take all day. Bette Davis fans, too! Good luck finding the plaque, "The key to life is accepting challenges. Once someone stops doing this, he's dead." |
