Comments
Comments: Microspikes not needed for the first 1/2 mile or so. Arrived about 8:30am to a half dozen cars in the lot. Good packed powder conditions with a light dusting in the morning, once you get some elevation. Lost the Engine Hill bushwhack probably 2/3’s the way through and got into some bad postholing. Probably my own fault for not paying close enough attention to the tracks I was following but others reported similar problems. Eventually came across the proper bushwhack and came out in the right spot on the Isolation trail. Few spots on Iso Express would have been better with snowshoes, but microspikes got the job done. No sense in carrying if you’re only going to use them on 5% of the hike. Was going to skip the Engine Hill bushwhack after my experience on the way in, but came across some fellow hikers who skipped it on the way out and they reported bad postholing on the regular trail. Spent 10 minutes trying to find where I came out from Engine Hill, but once I found it I found the bushwhack was easy to follow from this direction. Marked it’s entrance on the Isolation trail with a stick for others behind me. Packed powder on the way in was quickly softening up and turning to soft loose granular on the way back. Awesome views from Isolation today, just a stiff wind. Washington was in the clouds around noon unfortunately, or the views would have been truly spectacular. Looked to have cleared by the time I returned to the car. About 6 hour hike on the dime for me, saw about a dozen others out there.
