Was planning to do a 3day/2night backpack trip to the Dry River lean-to using the lean-to as camp for the 2 nights and explore the area on the middle day. Weather forecast showed 50% chance of showers 1st day with good weather the rest of the days. Based on the info decided to go for it. Hiked up about 3 1/2 miles up the trail from the Rt 302 trailhead though with showers during into a steady rain, temperatures hovering around 40 degrees and the trail conditions increasingly difficult due to snow depth/condition and the nature of the rugged trail as it skirts the Dry River, we pulled the plugged and hiked back out. There was patches of soft snow and ice in the first mile of the trail though the further you went the snow depth increased. Started with micro-spikes though switched to snowshoes after Clinton trail junction. Heading up the valley pass the Clinton junction trail conditions became very hard with the sloppy slushy snow and the angle of the trail. |
