Started at the trailhead just before 4:00 a.m. to summit Waumbek before the work day. You could tell the warm temperatures last week melted a lot and caused the water to run down the trail causing it to ice with the most recent colder temperatures on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday morning was 0 degrees, -8 with the wind chill. Spikes went on very quickly.
Higher up in elevation was solid snow pack, no post holing. There are some patches of ice prior to summitting Starr King. We stayed to the right of the ice and used the trees to hold onto. Micro spikes were sufficient to walk across with. Starr King to Waumbeck was still packed out well.
And, the decent was mostly quick thanks to the mint trail, except taking precaution near those few ice patches. Get it before spring temperatures! |
