Comments
Comments: Sawyer River Road is largely free of ice and snow and I bare-booted to the trailhead. I have to think it will be entirely snow free soon if we get a couple of warm days.

I used microspikes on the trail proper on the way up to the summit and switched to trail crampons for the descent back to the trailhead. As long as the temperatures remain cold I cannot see any need for snowshoes at any point on the trail.

The first 2 1/2 miles on the trail, except at the very beginning, have pretty decent snow coverage with just a few exposed ground areas and open drainage. The snow packed trail itself is not in the best shape, post holes, etc., but solid. Past the last water crossing before it begins to climb there is a short segment of open ground. Once the climb begins the trail is in excellent shape, almost no post holes, just delightful really. The way it should be.

About 1/2 mile below Signal Ridge there is some drifting in the trail. Ankle deep, then calf deep, and maybe a little deeper, but really short segments and not much of an impediment.

All things considered, tough to beat early spring conditions (felt more like winter).
