Used micros until road walk. Crampons went for a ride. Snowshoes stayed in car. Hit bugle for sunrise and it was the only view of the day. Approach to Jackson was firm with sections of ice. Weather was pleasant with very light snow and barely freezing temps. No problem summiting in micros. Ice was probably too thin for crampons. Final approach and descent from Jackson may scare some people. Descent was more challenging and some parts presented purchase problems. Once in the trees there was one ice flow I felt safer sliding down, but my partner started upright with his catohlas. Judging by the extensive and impressive postholes, there is still over 3 feet of snow between Jackson and peirce. Conditions are rock solid and it wasn't an issue avoiding them. Hike to peirce was uneventful. There were some really crappy light traction at the Hut. Choose not to carry out. Peirce to Eisenhower loop was hard I've and rock. Saw some fresh tracks towards peirce that mysteriously disappeared after about 0.1. Spikes had trouble in some spots but relatively flat. About 0.1 some drifting up to 1 foot. Descent from Eisenhower was hard ice and we made it down in micros, but crampons would have been better. Ran into a gentleman hiking up ike I'm crampons at Edmands intersection and had a chat. Top of Edmands side Hill was annoying, about 4" of drift. with branches in face to try too avoid slipping down. Edmands to Clinton road was pretty ripped up, but mostly frozen and just a little bit weary on the ankles. The bottom was just a dusting in places. The road was very nice to walk on. Some cars had driven up to Edmands trailhead from both directions. There's a bump at the Crawford connector, but a car with high clearance could easily make it over. |
