Rocky Branch, bushwhacks, Davis
Microspikes were the traction of choice Saturday. On the way up, the slight monorail at low elevations was firm; on the way back down that afternoon, it was mashed potato snow. At higher elevations, long sections of the bushwhacks were either moderately or heavily post-holed, but they were frozen so solid that further booting did not do much more harm and snowshoes would have done no good. Other sections were fine. The texture of the snow at the last stretch up to the top was so chunky from freezing rain that it allowed us to control our speed and slide down a stretch that would otherwise have been too dangerous. All in all, Isolation was still frozen enough to be a good time. |
