Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All the exposed water crossings were rock hop-able. Other water crossings still had snow bridges in tact.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A ton of blow downs, nothing you can’t go under, over or to the side! But a ton of trees down and large branches. The IMP trail could use some blazes, not sure I even saw one.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Our three active dogs - lab/collie mutt, coonhound/lab mutt, westie we’re great on the trails! They had no trouble navigating all the elements. There was one ice luge coming Mount Hight that lasted about 20 feet in one section, and another 10 feet sections further down. We had one adult at the bottom, one at the top, so they could safely (and gracefully) slide down and shimmy down.
Bugs
Bugs: None
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: REI Teal Glove

Comments
Comments: We saw all the elements out there today! From mud, ice, and snow, to clouds, to sun, and to flurries! IMP South started as a muddy/leaf trek up for the first two miles and a surprise take off by a wild turkey. At mile 2, we put our microspikes on for a monorail of crusty snow and ice easily done with the microspikes. Around mile 3, we enjoyed some very well packed snow, making it a breeze to get up to Middle Carter in our spikes. From Middle Carter to South Carter, there was clearly a post hole parade! I’ve never seen anything like it. Fortunately, the snow was so well packed, that we could hop around the post holes. But it did make me feel like I was playing a game of “Step on a Crack, and Break Your Mama’s Back.”

Once we hit South Carter, we could enjoy the well packed snow with an occasional post hole to Carter Dome. Be sure to go to the little ledges, and take a photo with the Christmas Tree. Then we turned around and took the detour up Mount Hight from the gradual side. WORTH IT! What a 360 degree view. Then we descended on the steep side.
There were a few 20 foot and 10 foot ice luges where butt sliding was really the ONLY option. Would crampons have been useful, sure. But the microspikes and our butts did the trick. Despite the ice, the descent was quick!

19 Mile Brook Trail was just a monorail of crusty snow and ice, and pretty uneventful. Our microspikes stayed on until the car!
