Mixed bag with a little of everything today. As expected, the Mt. Shaw Trail was relatively dry but with minor mud, some flowing water and avoidable stretches of ice below the carriage roads. Carriage roads generally had good, supportive snow cover but were badly post holed and tedious going. Banana Trail had several sections of impressive ice flows up high that had to be worked around then intermittent snow and ice cover down to the Tate Mt. Trail which was dry and nice walking. We wore rock spikes on the carriage roads and upper Banana Trail.
Fun hike with Chris on a day when the wind was howling. Good views into the Whites but the Presidentials were in the soup. The waterfalls along the trail are gorgeous. |
