| Water Crossing Notes: |
The water levels were lower, today, than when I last hiked Carrigain on 2/24/22, so today I crossed via the main trail. I used my trash bags and the water was not much higher than mid shin. Yay for dry boots! |

| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Thank you to whoever took care of the three problems on Sawyer River Road, that were noted in late February! Also thank you to whoever hiked Signal Ridge trail with a saw! Much appreciated!! |

Turned out to be a fine day to hike Carrigain! I was worried, after slogging through miles of mashed potato snow for the Bonds, last week, but though there was a lot of mashed potato snow on Carrigain, it wasn’t super sticky or super deep, so it was easier to manage!!
Microspikes on the road walk both ways as there remain long stretches of ice and short stretches of mud. Snowshoes, for the entire actual trail, were perfect. On the way up they were the perfect traction with 1-2” new snow; on the way down they had the perfect grip on the warming snow, and kept me out of the numerous postholes. There is only about 50’ of bare rock on Signal Ridge, so I was able to keep my snowshoes on. When I got back down to the bottom of the climb I saw the only other hikers of the day - 5 young people in sweatpants and sneakers. I learned, long ago, that hikers don’t like unsolicited advice so I said nothing, just smiled and told them to have a good day. I did pray for them, though, multiple times on my way back.
The entire observation platform structure was covered in rime ice, which was pretty neat to see.
Other information: the Desolation trail has really deep postholes leading down from the summit. |
