Great conditions overall. The early start (7:00am) provided enough firmness to spike the entire way up to North Twin without causing any damage. Stayed on the herd path to avoid the first 2 water crossings. Mostly stable but spotty ice monorails down low on that path with lots of running water in spots until final river crossing. More snow than ice beyond that but still quite firm as long as we stayed on the spine. Irrelevant what we had on our feet. If we stepped off the spine, we sank in pretty significantly. Some locations worse than others. Put snow shoes on to go from North to South. Made for more efficient travel and prevented potential broken ankles from mis-stepping off the spine. Snow softened slightly as the day wore on so we kept the shoes on until back down at the bottom at the final water crossing, then donned the spikes again since there was still more ice than bare ground. Ice bridge was still in tact and pretty solid going both ways, even with the slightly warmer temps throughout the day. It will probably hold for a few more days. So if you're thinking of doing it, do it sooner than later. But step lightly! All other crossings were doable without much trouble, especially if you take your time to spot the best route. Boots could get slightly wet but nothing worth worrying about. Got back to our car before the rains came. No views to speak of today but still totally worth the effort! |
