Comments
Comments: Trail was a real mixed bag. We wore spikes from the trailhead, but there were extended patches of bare ground. As we gained elevation, the snow became more consistent and was hard and stable for the majority of the Stony Brook Trail. Once we reached the ridge, the conditions degraded. We tried switching to snowshoes, but that proved to be more treacherous to us, as the ledges are bare rock, with patches of ice in the woods. We switched back to Microspikes, fearing we'd fall wearing snowshoes. The trail has many postholes and is very soft across the ridge. The sunny spots are bare earth with small amounts of mud. Snow was crotch-deep with running water beneath as we witnessed in postholes. Snowshoes were not needed for us on the descent, as the temps were still cool enough, but you should definitely be carrying them as spring approaches.
