Comments
Comments: Heading up the Jewell Trail is still icy so spikes are needed. Further up the trail either spikes or snowshoes are needed. Still some areas of deep snow below tree line, but it is packed out well. Once above tree line, it is mainly rock, with icy/snowy patches between the rocks. heading across Gulfside to Jefferson was a bit of everything: bare rock, some deep patches of snow, mud, icy patches. Snowshoes were not needed above tree line. We barebooted the final summit cone to Jefferson but there were many slippery areas, so we needed to focus on every step. We put spikes back on at the summit for our descent rationalizing that it would be cheaper to buy new Hillsounds than pay a hospital bill.
