I would not be surprised if they close the Rattlesnake/Squam trails for mud season soon, as I imagine Old Bridle Path is a mess of slush/ice/mud at this point.
The Pasture Trail melts out much faster than most mountain trails in the region and it is indeed mostly snow/ice free. A little muddy on the flats down low (technically the Col Trail), but only damp on Pasture (from the incoming rain). No need for snowshoes or traction on this trail unless we get another frozen precipitation event.
It is not a bellwether trail, however, as there is snow/ice elsewhere on the mountain. I considered continuing on the Ridge Trail, but instantly hit patchy ice monorail.
Light rain started around 8 AM. Squam Lake is still fully covered in ice. |
