Comments
Comments: Did the entire hike in Hillsound Trail Crampons - snowshoes and Hillsound Pros came for a ride. The Jewell Spur water crossing at the cog is rock hoppable a bit upstream from the regular bridged crossing. The water level is pretty low. Going up Jewell - snow was wet, but pretty solid with intermittent patches of soft ice. Above treeline, the Jewell gets increasingly rocky with some ice in the holes between boulders. Same for the Gulfside until the south end of the Clay Loop to the summit, at which point we were walking over soft ice in a dense white cloud. Pretty windy at the summit. No view until about 30 minutes after we let the summit. By then the ice we had encountered on the way up had turned to slush or melted. The descent down Jewell was fast and slushy, but not in a postholy way.
