 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Lot is small. Only two other cars when I arrived around 10:15 but within 5 minutes the lot was full (only accommodates about 6 cars. No roadside parking.) |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow - Spring Snow |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
None to speak of although with much more melting a lot of the trail will be a flowing stream. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
4 blowdowns between 1-1.5 miles from trailhead. First was a little tricky because I didn’t want to walk in the woods on bare ground with spikes. Others were easy to step over. |

First 1.5 miles was almost all soft, melting ice with a couple small patches of spring, slushy snow. After about 1.5 miles it was more snow than ice but both still very much present. Not enough snow to posthole except in a couple spots near the summit. If you stay on the trail, spikes are definitely adequate. I carried my snowshoes all day. Didn’t see anyone else using them. Beautiful warm day. Breezy at the summit and the firetower provides a great spot for lunch out of the wind. The Forest Service does a beautiful job maintaining this tower. And what a great view to wake up to if you stay over (as two people did last night)! |
