Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked roadside at, what’s shown on Gaia as the jct of Foss Farm Rd and Stevens Way in Durham. Quiet neighborhood and plenty of room. There’s a sign asking you not to pull off onto the dirt road that’s the start of the trail and would appear to be a good place to park because UNH trucks need to use it.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Ice - Breakable Crust, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Small Patches

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: We turned around on the Yellow Trail due to the crossing of LaRoche Brook. It’s narrow but a bit deep (maybe a foot) with no rocks and such to hop on. Some ice on other side you could hop on to but it didn’t look like it would hold you. Not dangerous or anything but looked a little tricky to do without getting wet so a good place to turn around.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trails are easy to follow and I don’t recall any blowdowns. They aren’t blazed but I think are marked with UNH emblems. Some jcts are marked with a post in the ground and map of the trail system; others are not.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Sure
Bugs
Bugs: None
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: There’s a glove hung at the trailhead

A nice afternoon walk with mom in my hometown. We took what I believe is shown on the maps as the Red Trail south. A little over halfway to Bennett Rd, the Red Trail makes a loop. We went down the western end of the loop then we were going to do the out-and-back on the Yellow Trail to Bennett Rd but got turned around at the crossing of LaRoche Brook which didn’t look very easy to cross without getting wet. The trail briefly follows a powerline cut here. This can all be seen on Gaia. We retraced our steps back to Red Trail, competed the eastern half of the loop, then followed it back almost all the way back to the car, but then took a right and completed the Blue Loop to the east.

The purpose of the trail report is to 1) let folks know about these local trails if they are interested, particularly if they are local to the area, and 2) to let everyone know that the snow is basically gone from this area and there’s just a bit of ice remaining. A bit of water and mud on the trails but nothing crazy. Ice isn’t persistent enough to warrant microspikes. I’d tell you how long the hike was but I threw everything off by forgetting to stop Gaia. It was somewhere between 3 and 4mi with less than 100ft of gain and took us almost 1.5hrs.
