Day 130, Peak 111. 2nd hike of the day after Square Mtn in Milan. I started at 11:45am so by this point in the day things had warmed up nicely. Snow cover, was much deeper here than it was on Square Mtn though still not all that deep. The snow had warmed and was wet and a bit sticky. Still some crust too. I wore snowshoes the whole way.
From where I parked, I whacked into the woods just south of west at flat/gentle grades for almost a half mile in open woods before coming to the base of the steeps at 1400 or 1500ft. I continued on this bearing a little while longer as the grade increased before turning NW at 1550ft. I believe this was to avoid some cliff bands or something. At 1650ft or so I crossed a road. The road wasn’t going in the direction I wanted to so I continued on my way. I crossed what I figured was the same road again shortly thereafter at 1800ft. I made a note to follow it on my way down as to see if it connected me back with my tracks when I first crossed a road. It would certainly be a less steep approach. I continued NW to about 1925ft, where from there I headed due west to the peak, crossing the NH/ME border in 0.1mi about 0.1mi north of the eastern sub peak of Halfmoon. I continued W/SW to the peak soon following the eastern ridge of the mountain. Woods were open the whole way though some parts of the ascent are rather steep as others have noted. That said, this one was quicker and easier than I would’ve thought! I don’t quite understand the love for it though…open woods bud no scenic woods or nice views really. The highpoint and jar were easy to find. The woods become a little tighter at the highpoint. There’s a wooden block nailed to a tree showing a halfmoon.
I returned the same way except for where I ran into the road again. I followed it south for a ways, and, when it didn’t seem to be switchbacking back to the direction I wanted to go soon enough, I just whacked off of it and back to my tracks. The hike was roughly 3mi with 1300ft of gain taking me 2hrs to complete. 235 more days and 254 more peaks to go… |
