Ravine trail from Pinkham is rock solid packed snow from edge to edge. Small amounts of ice and patches of ice balls from the snowmobiles. We didn’t use any traction up and it was fine, just needed to watch your footing on a few sections. Fire road to lion head winter was more of the same with no ice. Crampons not needed on winter until you get to the steep sections. From there you leave packed snow into exposed glare ice with a small dose of hard pack mixed in here or there. Crampons and an ice axe were essential equipment here. Above treeline to lion head was more of the same, packed snow cover and ice. Trail is impossible to miss due to the amount of packing and traction marks. After lion head it’s the flat section which is mostly blown clean along the rim over to the final rise. That’s a wall of you guessed it, primarily packed snow. Boulder section leading to the summit was mostly clean save for scattered sections of snow and ice. Left the crampons on from bottom of lion head winter all the way to the top and back again. Chose to descend final piece of ravine trail in micro spikes. |
