| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
I was the only car at 8AM; one other when I left. Plenty of room for about 10 cars. |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Ice - Blue, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Light Traction, Traction |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
The warm weather led to the collapse and fragility of many ice bridges, so I followed the AMC White Mountain Guide suggestion and avoided all three by bushwhacking to the left of the first crossing, meeting up with an unused snowmobile trail that bridged both streams, and then rejoining the trail with a minor bushwhack. Easy going, followed tracks of someone else who did the same thing. |

Beautiful sunny day, low 20s F at start and warmer at the end, not much wind. About 1" of fresh snow. I barebooted the 1.3 miles from the parking lot to the trailhead, then put on crampons. Saw two others with microspikes. Either would be fine. Blue and yellow ice intermittently, mostly avoidable except on the steep final 0.2 mile pitch to the summit. Nearly windless, lovely views. The final steep part was fine in crampons (or microspikes) - no need to butt slide on the way down it. By the time I returned to the lower sections of the trail, temperatures had risen so that snow was soft and trail was nearly bare for the bottom mile. Long hike but steady gradual grade most of the way, wide trail, footing good - highly recommended! |
