Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks North Kinsman, NH
Trails
Trails: Mt. Kinsman Trail, Kinsman Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Wednesday, March 9, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The parking lot has been plowed and is free of snow. However, the is a lot of ice on the entrance road, and throughout the parking lot. Think about the option of getting your spikes on BEFORE you leave your vehicle - yes, it's that icy
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Ice - Black, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Ice - Breakable Crust, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow/Ice - Postholes, Slush, Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction, Traction, Ice Axe
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The three water crossings on the trail were "stable", and passable. The water was exposed in sections, and the ice-bridges were somewhat weak.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trial team has been doing a fantastic job clearing the fallen trees from the trail. It should be noted that there are a number of rotten "widow makers" hanging over the trail - well beyond the reach of the trial team. Just be aware as you travel on the trail that at some point in time, the trees will fall.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: We saw no dogs on the trail today. In fact, based on the volume of ice on the trails, I believe that dogs would have difficulty navigating the trail in its current conditions. My hiking buddy noted that they were thankful that they didn't bring their 4-legged partner on the trail today.
Bugs
Bugs: No bugs on this trip!
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: About 1-mile into the trail, we had found a Bernie Sanders pullover. We hung it from a branch and tagged it with some surveyor's tape. On our descent, the puller over was gone... yet, we didn't see anyone on the trail. It's a mystery!

Comments
Comments: For the most part, the entire trail had snow, and or ice. Above 2k feet... there were "rivers" of ice falls that took over the trail, and it made navigation a challenge, and add a considerable amount of time to the hike.
