 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
There was a plowed out spot right at the place I wanted to start on Under the Mountain Rd. This spot was roughly halfway in between Bobbin Mill Rd and where Under the Mountain Rd ends and becomes Moulton Hill Rd and Brook Rd to the south. The roads in were mostly dirt and were a mix of dirt, snow, and ice but well travelled as there’s homes on these back roads. Some hills, but should be very doable for any car. My FWD car did fine. |

Day 124, Peak 102. 1st hike of the day. Very chilly morning with temps at -8 at 7:15am but warmed up nicely with lots of sun and blue skies :) A group was kind enough to break a loop over Signal Ridge and Gardner Ridge - Middle Peak on Wednesday so I took advantage of this. Though they travelled the ridge between the two peaks, due to lots of PUDS, they recommended to me that I do an out-and-back to each peak. I started with Signal.
From my plowed spot, I followed there snowshoes tracks into the woods. I forget if this started on a road or soon came to a road but I followed this gently graded road uphill to the north. Then, the tracks turned (almost like a switchback) and followed another road uphill at easy grades to the W/SW. I think the road turned again and finally ended just below 2000ft where our luck ran out and the real bushwhacking began! Here, there was some spruce to fight through. It was actually a little challenging to follow the other groups tracks through it. Their tracks got us out of it quickly though and headed NW to the minor col between the main peak and a SW bump. From there I followed their tracks NE to the true summit. This spot was a bit of a pain as the woods got thicker again so there wasn’t as much snow on the ground and, in fact, the snow cover was so minimal that my snowshoes kept on getting caught on various things and I’d fall. You’ll come back out into the open just before the summit. The register was easy to find and there’s some views here toward the White Mountains that included the Presidentials, Mount Moosilauke and Cobble Hill, Moody Ledge, and Green Mtn underneath it.
I used snowshoes the entire time and there’s spots where they’re obviously still needed but snow depth in many places was very minimal making them not all that practical to use. 4.25mi with 1100ft of gain taking me just under 2.5hrs. Pretty quick given that I was lucky enough to follow others tracks :) 241 more peaks and 263 more peaks to go… |
