Wachipauka Pond Trail (from South end on Rte NH 25C), Webster Slide Trail, Pond Spur Trail
The trail consisted of a shallow trough with 3” of fresh dry powder over a mostly stable but uneven surface of frozen granular made by bare-booters. The uneven surface caused my feet to slide around slightly when using crampons, and it was easier walking with snowshoes. There was much less snow coverage on the Webster Slide Trail, exposing some rock and ice on the steep middle section. I switched to crampons for the trip up to the ledges, down to the pond, and back to the 4-way junction. Then it was snowshoes back to the car.
I had a nice conversation with Mark from NYC. When I came upon him he was in his sleeping bag in the middle of the trail, having bivouaced there overnight. LOL. He is slowly making his way north from NYC on the AT, stopping to visit friends and relatives along the way. Tough sledding in the Winter without the normal AT support network. |
