Comments
Comments: This bluebird day came at cost: Great care was required the whole way. The lower elevations had a layer of soft, minimally packed snow on top of slippery ice, with lots of rock jutting out. Don't walk too fast or a foot may fly out from underneath you. Neither snowshoes nor microspikes are ideal coming up the Boulder (I wore snowshoes), but both are better than bare boots. The Belknap Range Trail was broken out almost exactly to the peak of Mt. Straighback. After that, I broke trail to North Peak. Once again I attempted to break out the North Straightback Link. I got to the part with the rocky ledge, saw it had a layer of slippery ice underneath that fluffy snow, and turned back to break trail up Quarry Spur. No part of this route was suitable for sliding (not on purpose anyway).
