Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks North Twin Mountain, South Twin Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: Little River Road, herd path, Haystack Road, North Twin Trail, North Twin Spur
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, February 26, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at 7 Dwarfs Motel and paid the $10 parking fee (left on windshield). Then walked down the private property hiking trail to get to the North Twin trailhead. If you take this private trail make sure to take your spikes off when crossing the wooden bridges as the owner requests.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Black, Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable)
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Water crossing over Little River was pretty sketchy. Strong flow, relatively deep water in spots and the ice bridges leave some to be desired. Would recommend going past where the marked trail crosses the river and finding a suitable spot to cross.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes:
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: The trail itself should be fine for any dog that is familiar with winter hiking in the whites. However, the only concern I'd have is the water crossing. An experienced dog should be fine, but that would definitely be the most sketchy part.
Bugs
Bugs: Winter, none.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Some trail runners at the trailhead under the map.

Comments
Comments: Snow conditions were okay. New snow covered the trail well and there wasn't much snow remaining below at lower elevation so not too many hard icy portholes submerged under the powder. The powder was a little slippery and hard to dig into with microspikes at times. During the steeper/higher parts of the ascent and between peaks I'd recommend using snowshoes. There isn't enough snow to post hole at low elevation so spikes will be fine. Above about 3000 ft you'll start postholing though.
