Comments
Comments: I should have gone with my gut and went with snowshoes (thought there would be less snow cover down here), but instead I opted for Microspikes. With the exception of the boardwalk, the headwall of the Yellow Trail, and a few ledges on the Ridge Trail, there was full snow cover. Snowpack is more than a foot deep in places (including above the Yellow headwall area). More importantly, extended stretches of the Mt. Rowe Trail and the Yellow Trail were blue ice flows, that often outmatched Microspikes (as evidenced by people gingerly descending and hanging onto trees). Mountain snowshoes would have provided superior traction. Hillsounds would not have been overkill. I opted to bushwhack for awhile on the way down to avoid the ice (found some nice open woods, but once again snowshoes would have been much nicer).

Ridge Trail was a minefield of postholes, some quite deep.

With close to full snow cover, the forecast snow tomorrow should accumulate from the getgo. Snowshoes will be the way to go.
