Temps were in the lower 50s today and a flood advisory was in effect. Soon after starting on Avalon, we encountered our first stream, which was raging. Turn left and there’s a couple logs that makes crossing feasible. At the second major crossing, perhaps a mile in, it’s much more challenging, which is why we turned back. Look far to the right, and you’ll be able to make out a snow bridge. It was do-able for my wife, but she’s lighter and has better balance, which is required for a jump across the bridge to the ground on the side opposite. Lots of post holes, which, combined with tonight’s low temps, will make hiking quite difficult tomorrow. I fell through snow bridges twice. Thanks to Chaz from Portland, who helped lift me out of the second one.
This is pretty much the story for several of the trails in this area, including Crawford Path, the route up Willard, etc. |
