 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Holiday and vacation week, Crawford Notch was jammed up. We parked on the side of 302 to save Riley $5. |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Ice - Blue, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Wet/Slippery Rock, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow - Drifts, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow/Ice - Postholes, Snow/Ice - Small Patches |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Light Traction |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
All the small streams on Crawford Path are either snowbridged or an easy step over. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Couple of trees down, no issues getting around them. |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw some good boys and girls out there having fun with their humans. I think all but one of them went to Pierce. I'd be careful with the inexperienced pups continuing on to Eisenhower with the mixed conditions (ice, bare rock, etc). |
|
 | Bugs: |
We saw a few of those mosquito spiders with wings, it was kinda tropical yesterday. |
|
 | Lost and Found: |
Someone's deodorant is at the trailhead. Don't ask me, everyone smelled like they usually do, I just write the trip reports haha. |

Split up the crew today. Hayley & Emma headed in one direction towards TFW at Crawford Depot and Riley & I went in the other for a date with Eisenhower. Felt a little weird, but still nice to see them and shoot the ish for a bit before we went our separate ways. Crawford Path was busy as expected. Based on the temps (it was tropical below treeline) we wore our snowshoes, most were in spikes. We turned the corner at Webster/Jackson and left most of the people behind, but still a decent amount continued on. We ditched the shoes in the bushes towards the end of the puds and switched into hillsound t-c's, which were fine for the loop up to the summit. One section (the rocky switchback with the short ladder off to the side) has an iceflow that requires some care. Other than that its patchy ice, some bare rock, soft drifty powder in the trees, and then below treeline Crawford path was starting to get mushy. Looked like spring, plenty of postholes off to the side.
Note that with the lack of snowpack up there, the alpine vegetation is not getting its usual protection. Saw some indication that people had been stomping around where they shouldn't be. Be nice to the plants, its a tough life up in the alpine.
For anyone interested, we didn't go down, but it definitely sounded like Gibbs Falls was opened up. |
