Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: I went into the drink on one of the few un-bridged creeks on Zealand Trail, mostly due to the warm temps and being tired. Wasn’t paying attention to ice levels. There is another crossing of this same area where you can keep your feet dry.

Comments
Comments: Route:
Zealand Rd road-walk > Hale Brook Trail > Lend-A-Hand > Zealand Trail > road walk on Zealand rd.

Zealand rd: closed and gated for winter. Low snow levels. Some in our group wore spikes, some wore snowshoes, some only wore boots. Who cares? It’s a road walk. By the end no one cared about anything except getting back to the car…

Hale Brook: nicely blazed in yellow. Well established trench. Choppy with some side trail postholes. I wore snowshoes as did several others in our group. Two wore spikes. Warm temps turned the trail into mashed potatoes. Water crossings possible with disintegrating ice bridges. Some very small sections of blue ice under the snow. I had no issue with these in snowshoes.

Lend-A-Hand: nicely blazed in blue. Trench well established. Nearly the entire group switched to snowshoes due to the softness and stickiness of the snow. One fella coming up in spikes. Many postholes from prior visitors. Snow still covers all those rocks nicely so it was a fun trek down from Hale.

Zealand trail: well blazed in blue, gently graded, popular route up to Zealand Hut (open year round on a caretaker basis). The trench was well established but was very choppy with numerous postholes. Most water crossings open, see note above about the only one of significance.
