A FINE day above the forest was had. Congrats to three NETC folks on finishing goals today. For me this gridded out February, as well as Wash and Monroe! Trails are in great shape for now. Jewell from USFS ammo to the junction from Base Station Road is a little choppy but nothing bad. Once it enters the paid lot portion, its a hard parked speedway to treeline. Superb conditions. Above treeline was also hard packed, little chopped up but very much better than expected. We opted for a much shorter whack to gulfside from Jewell as there is minimal snowcover. From here, until dropping into treeline, you could make the case for k10's/gravels/even 12 point full crampons - several did have them. There is zero need for snowshoes, I took mine and they stayed on the pack all day. However there is a staggering amount of blue ice out there. I had sharp spikes and only went for ride a couple times. Ran into the Old Man of the Mountain, the man, the myth, the legend - Gayorg around Sphinx Col! Wind was spirited, if this was facebook I would confidentally incorrectly claim it was blowing well over 100. In reality MWOBS had it at 40/45 for our Jeff and 30/35 on our Wash. I was on the struggle bus on the return trip from Jeff and almost bailed, but im glad my partners helped me through. The cog railway swath is a sheet of ice, sorry skiers. As is the trek from Wash to LOTC. There is an incredibly direct route up Monroe but I chose the less exciting version with switchbacks. Enjoyed "Drinks on the house" on the roof of LOTC hut in celebration. LOTC to the car was a speedway, but there is some serious ice flowage that make the pucker factor go from 0-100 real quick. A huge thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Beefman for the note and skrewball on the car upon return! |
