| Water Crossing Notes: |
A few, but two were notable:
The first, about five miles into the hike, along the Black Pond Bushwack. You’ll have to cross an icy log, but with micro spikes and trekking poles, it can be done.
The last crossing (about twenty minutes further) was already frozen under what was an icy bridge. With microspikes and trekking poles, I was able to cross. Although there were spots were my footing was in about two inches of water.

From the previous rain and meltdown, and discouraging reports, I wasn’t expecting to make a summit. But I just needed some time out on the woods. I figured, if nothing, I would at least get Black Pond Trail for my White Mountain Redlining List. But I came across two guys that were returning from the Black Pond Bushwack and they said it was passible. Also, they mentioned passing a group of seven people, on there way up to Owls Head. I figured if they can’t make it, I’ll see them on their way back. Also, they really packed the trail down well.
I’ve never taken these two “bushwacks” up Owls Head. It wasn’t anything like I was expecting. The trail was surprisingly well-packed and easier to follow than many trails I’ve hiked in the Whites. |
