Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The water crossing at the intersection between the Cascade Brook Trail and Kinsman Pond Trail was so bad (thick ice, thin ice, fast-flowing water) that I changed my route and did not turn left onto the Kinsman Pond Trail.

Comments
Comments: The lower part of the Cascade Basin trail has a thin layer of snow over ice. Even in spikes, it required some care. The upper part of Cascade Basin is broken out but I suspect it may not have been dead-on the true trail. It reached the official intersection with Kinsman Pond just fine, though. What I could see of Kinsman Pond Trail from across the stream did look partially broken out, but I did not see a way to cross the stream itself. (At Lafayette Place I would later see a sign saying that a bridge over Cascade Brook is out, and this may have been where it was.) The Cascade Brook Trail proceeds to Lonesome Lake Hut without incident. I don't think there was much difference between snowshoes or microspikes up Fishin' Jimmy, but I reached a block of ice that I was not confident of climbing around and turned back. Ample sliding awaited me on the way down. The Lonesome Lake trail around the lake and the stretch of Pemi Trail back to the Basin are best done in snowshoes but can be done in less.
