Parked in the snowmobile parking area at Log Haven. I double checked with employee opening the building at 10 am they said they wished they were out cross country skiing instead of working. |

snowmobile trail was groomed when it was still snowing. Glad it snowed because I heard from snowmobilers that it was quite icy before. |

Drive to Log Haven was sketchy, a couple of inches of snow on the road from the time I left Route 3 in Groveton and cut over to 16 thru Milan all the way past Errol. 9 degrees and sunny when I started at 10 ish. I skate skied cross country and it was a grind, I had not realized it was one big up hill for 3 miles, the next mile was flatish and downhill to the RR spur and the beginning of my whack. It has been almost 6 years since I last visited Kelsey. I think the lower part has been logged recently and it was easy walking right up to the point the mountain gets steep. Lots of fresh powder on top of a light crust that I would either stay up on or break through so I had to pay attention. I went straight at the wind turbine and made my way around and over some ledgy steep icy areas with little problems. I did lose my snowshoe once in a deep post hole, cross country ski boots are slippery little devils in snowshoe bindings. After lots of climbing I finally could see the blade of the wind turbine and thought yeah I am close, Not, things got thicker and steeper and the trees more snow loaded. When I reached the summit it was windy and cold and I quickly pulled off my wet fleece and put on my down jacket and shell. The summit was completely wind blown bare down to the road's crushed rock. This wind turbine was not spinning, all the rest I could see south were spinning. I did a big circle walk around the summit and enjoyed the view, but it was a little cloudy so I couldn't see very far south. I followed my tracks back down and it sure was a lot faster than going up! I clicked into my skis and skied back up hill to the 4 mile marker intersection and then the next mile was felt flatish. From 3 miles down it was zippy doo da fast ski down all the way to Log Haven. My app clocked me at 25 miles an hour. Every bushwhack peak should end with a 3 mile downhill ski and a seat at the Log Haven bar. 9 miles total. |
