Comments
Comments: I decided to revisit this one based in part on Gregory's NETC report from yesterday which mentioned that the access road to the gravel pit in Gorham was being plowed. Not sure if this is going to be a regular thing, but it makes getting to Pine Mtn. Trail a whole lot easier in winter and I'll make a note of it for the third edition of the 52WAV guidebook.

The lower snowmobile portions of the trail were packed highways. In fact, the snowmobile traffic is wearing the routes down to bare ice.

The footpath portion of Pine Mountain Trail was okay, but churned up and frozen in place which made walking awkward. If you're a fellow hiker with joint (ankle/knee) issues, you may want to be mindful of your steps through here. There was a dusting to about an inch of new snow over a solid base. The open woods section just below the spur to Chapel Rock is drifted a bit, and snow depths here were about 2-3 in. The Jeep road portion of the trail was being used by snowmobiles and was solid.

The short stretch of Ledge Trail from the summit down to Pinkham Ledge was very heavily postholed, and I stepped carefully and slowly. It didn't look like there was any traffic beyond the ledge.

Light traction round-trip was fine today, but snowshoes will be best when things warm up again this week.
