We experienced all conditions today. Thick rivers of ice that made you want crampons. Bare trail that made you take off your spikes. A fresh half-inch of powder that covered said ice. Often, there was running water below the frozen trail. Sometimes you'd break through, and although the water wasn't deep enough to get your boots wet, it was still startling. More of that to come, I assume.
Spikes were sufficient most of the time. If you have crampons, you could wear them. The snow was very compact from thaw-freeze cycles, so I don't think snowshoes would have helped unless it got much warmer. There are some areas with very rigid postholes (don't ask me how I know).
Overall, it was a nice day in the woods. We ate lunch near Round Pond, which I had never seen before despite being 80% done with redlining the range. |
