Comments
Comments: Every surface imaginable today. Wore snowshoes the entire hike for better traction and to minimize post holes. Only took them off at the top of Mount Major where there was a lot of exposed rock, very little snow and ice that was easy to get around. Coming down on Boulder Loop Trail one might want to switch to spikes for the initial descent as it was also very rocky with patches of snow and ice. I didn’t feel like switching so I kept snowshoes on and tried to stay on snow and ice as much as possible. Back at the start of the hike, the Main Trail was almost entirely thick ice up to the split with Brook Trail. There were signs of prior life forms on every trail- enough to help follow the trail but not enough to consider the trail “broken”- but less so on North Straightback Link, Quarry Trail and Boulder Loop. Post holes throughout but often off to side of trail and many were easy to dodge. Beautiful sunny day although quite windy. 10 degrees with the windchill on top of Major. Only saw 4 people on trail all day despite 4 cars in the lot at 10:00 am and many more at about 3:30.
