The trail was a mixed bag of conditions. Started out down low with some boilerplate ice and the became very choppy up until the brook crossing. After the brook crossing the conditions improved some with a smoother, more solid foot bed. Above the split to Piper, the snowmobile section was mostly smooth but softer than the hiking trail. There was some boilerplate ice on the ledges as well as a few areas of bare ground. I managed pretty well with just spikes but would have preferred snowshoes from the split to the summit. Lots of slushy puddles and some running water still as the trails dry out today. The temps fell fast this morning and will set up a solid, rough trail tonight. We will need more snow to smooth out the trails as they have been torn up. |
