Day 105, Peak 93. 2nd hike and 3rd peak of the day after Mt Misery and Towns Mountain. Someone told me that a group of them had broken this one out on Wednesday and I wanted to make sure to take advantage of their tracks! Given that my hike earlier took much longer than anticipated due to tricky snow conditions, I was a bit worried about finishing before sunset but this was so well broken and hard packed it was a very, very quick hike, much to my liking after my recent grueling hikes!
I walked north on Old Cherry Mtn Rd North for maybe 0.1mi before turning right onto the snowmobile trail which is shown as Mill Brook Rd on Gaia. I followed it for a little more than 1mi before bearing left off of it (where Mill Brook rd permanently heads south) onto a road. It wasn’t a snowmobile trail but was still very quick walking since a group had already broken it out. This connected me to another snowmobile trail that had come up from Jefferson Notch Rd to the east. I followed this north for a few tenths of a mile before jumping off of it to the right where the previous group had started their bushwhack. Their track ascended at very gentle grades for a ways before becoming more moderate as you approached the peak. A flat area shortly before the high point and canister you’ve got to traverse through. Open hardwoods (surprise, surprise) the whole way. I returned in my tracks.
The whole hike was about 5.75mi with 600ft (there were many ups and downs on the snowmobile trails) of gain taking just over 2.25hrs…it was nice to move fast again! 260 more days and 272 more peaks. |
