Temps in the mid 30s, periodic rain showers throughout the day. Trail conditions varied. We used MSR Lightening Assent snowshoes all the way up to Mt Osceola and back across to the headwall of East. For the descent we switched to Kahtoola K-10 crampons. The snowshoe televators were calf savers on the very steep ascent of East. There were a few areas of drifting between East and Osceola. Hard unconsolidated show in this section. We took the bypass to the chimney bypass. It looked like someone had tried the chimney recently. The descent down East was difficult even with crampons. The top layer was very soft and slick. It was hard to get a good grip without slipping. Spent a lot of time using the post holes along side of the trail for stability. The few butt slides we tried were VERY fast and hard to control. Greeley Pond trail is solid packed and firm. sThe Mt Osceola trail was a combo of soft loose granular on top of a solid base, and a solid packed slick surface. All the tricky ledges were covered in snow. No problem on the ascent. I would definitely recommend televators for the ascent and crampons for the descent. In coming rain, may make the snow surface icy and slick. |
