Road walk was a mix of sure footing, soft snow, divots and snowmobile track.
Hale Brook Trail was hard packed and full of divots and frankly, many very impressive postholes. It definitely took concentration to navigate the many ankle breaking holes on the ascent, and even more so on the descent. We barebooted all the way to the summit without creating one divot as the pack was firm, and the divots at times aided our steps in the steeper sections. We put on spikes at the summit for the descent, and kept them on until the Sugarloaf Trail intersection on Zealand Road.
Of interest to note. It seems as though some poor soul descended this trail while the snow was soft, in bareboots. It has since hardened and left at times 1-3 foot deep postholes on the sides of the tight snowshoe/divot trail. We even followed these postholes for most of the 2.5 mile walk out on Zealand. Some of those postholes along the trail were nearly waist deep. It had to have been a miserable experience and I hope whoever it was, is ok.
