The soft, wet snow and slush from Saturday (see JMM's report) set up hard from the overnight temperatures. The first half mile of the Garfield Trail was a mix of ice, and frozen slush and granular snow. From there to about the three-mile point the trail was hard frozen granular. And from there to the summit, the trail was consolidated dry snow over a frozen granular base. All portions of the trails were booted in to the point that only micro-spikes were needed. All five of the members of our group carried snowshoes, but they had a free ride. All other hikers we encountered wore only micro-spikes. Lower sections of the trail were uneven with a lot of shallow divots, but there were only a few postholes in the center of the trail. If you ventured off the trail you would sink to your knees. The trail is fast and easy walking right now, but that could change with the rain and warm weather forecast for the end of the week. The next few days is a perfect time to hike this mountain.
Many thanks to Amal for organizing this hike. |
