From Highland Center to just below the summit of Pierce, trail is well-packed and joy to hike with two to four inches of new snow. Early this morning when the temperatures were well below zero, I used light traction, but later in the morning on the return trip the trail was softening and I used snowshoes to keep from punching through some of the thinner parts of the crust. From just below the summit of Pierce, where the trail joins the AT, to the intersection of the Eisenhower Loop, three-quarters of the previously packed trail was obliterated by drifting snow, varying in depths of one to two feet. Where the trail was not drifted, there was four to six inches of new snow. The same holds true for the Eisenhower loop up to the summit (I went part of the way up). I did the best I could to pack down a new track through the drifts and re-establish the trail. Enjoy! |
