Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: From the Kanc Bear about a mile Bear Notch Road is gated. There is a big turn around area for the snowmobile trailers at the gate where there are no parking signs but south from there the shoulder is plowed wide for parking. Two snowmobile rigs with trailers and a Dog Sled truck were there at 9 am. Dog sled truck was gone when I returned.

I cross country skied from the gate north to just past the height of land of the Bear Notch Road, about 3 miles, snow was groomed frozen golf balls but okay. I turned left onto the XF411/snowmobile trail for a few minutes and stopped skiing as the road began to turn right. I skied into the woods a couple strides and put on my snowshoes, I left my skis right where I took them off. Oh wonderful fun staying right up on top of the snow, I was giddy wow this is great going up the mountain in open hardwoods. Well things began to get serious around elevations 2500 because the snow had not consolidated and did not have a crust and I was now sinking in sugary deep snow and as I climbed higher it got deeper and was worse in the softwoods. There is well over 2 feet of snow up there. I slabbed a bit north to try to find less steep terrain and I zigged and zagged a bit. Somewhere along the way I lost my hat (I did find it on the way back down). Great views from the around summit up Crawford Notch, Waterville Valley's ski trails, such a grand perch! I enjoyed my thermos of coffee with the scenery. I felt like I flew down the mountain back to my skis! Skiing was great the snowmachines ground up the frozen golf balls and a nice sugary fast snow was left behind. My max speed was 19.5 mph. ha ha. I love it. It was a wonderful morning.
