Thanks to the people who had broken out Lawrence trail going almost up to the Paugus Cliff most likely earlier in the week and the two guys who were doing what seemed like the reverse of my route today and broke out Lawrence, Old Paugus Trail, and Big Rock Cave Trail! I was prepared to break trail the entire day and was pleasantly surprised I did not have to.
Bushwack to Mt Paugus was pretty open until just before the summit. I was playing my favorite game of snowshoe roulette: which step will sink down 1 foot or down to my belly button? I lost the game of roulette more than I won. I'm not sure I actually got to the real summit as I did not see any canister on a tree.
The best views were some ledges going up to Paugus and then on the way down after. Spooky clouds over Whiteface/Passaconaway all day.
Cabin trail from Lawrence trail was not broken but had a discernible trench when I passed by it midday. From the 4 way intersection of Kelley/Oliverian Brook Trail/Lawrence, Lawrence heading to Square Ledge and Oliverian Brook were not broken at all. Beeline trail from Old Paugus Trail was not broken at all either, and Old Paugus Trail heading down from the Big Rock Cave junction wasn't broken. Whitin Brook trail was also unbroken. Cabin trail heading up from Cabin trailhead _was_ broken pretty well. I saw two people heading up to Mexico from Cabin trailhead without snowshoes and a dog, but I doubt they were able to make it to the summit. Snow is shallow at the base but gets deeper pretty fast. |
