Back to the night project after a lengthy hiatus. left the lot at 6:30, temp. 32. Walked the road by moonlight and had to bail off to the side thigh-deep halfway up to avoid 6 mobiles coming up behind. Trail was well-packed so I bare-booted to the start of the switchbacks. 5 minutes with my snowshoes on and my 22 year old Atlas binding gave up the ghost. No jury-rig possible and I considered bailing, as much to avoid mucking up the track as in anticipation of the increased work-load ahead. But the track was still quite firm and I'd come in that far, so I left them for the hike out and carried on. Didn't really start making some holes until just before the ridge and even then the wind was filling them in pretty quick, so all in all not too much harm done, Summit in the clouds at 10:50. Very windy and 18F. Back to the car at 1:50. Beautiful night out, only four trips left. |
