Simple out & back using Stony Brook and Carter-Moriah trails.

Stony Brook: well blazed in blue in lower elevations, fewer blazes in upper elevations. The gorgeous trench; painstakingly broken out by Teal Goat, Rockin’ Rhonda, and friends; is a sight to behold. Ahhhhhmazing. Those that have followed this week have, I think, used snowshoes to build one of those fantastic Whites-Style snow sidewalks. It is beautiful. Of the 5 people we encountered, all were wearing snowshoes. But man, that snow was SOFT. My buddy elected to use spikes, and stayed on top of the trench (but she is over 60 years old, so I don’t argue with her).

Carter-Moriah: this is the AT and is well blazed in white with supplemental carins. Fun game: yell “Hey Carin!” whenever you see one (it usually elicits a conversation with an inanimate object). This trail is also well broken out and simple to follow. Man! A gridder (had to be the woman from Saco, ME) clocked her 12/12 grid for Moriah. Note left on the summit attesting to this. Awesome! Lots of soft, soft snow along this trail. So that I don’t piss Timmy off: wear what footwear you want. But when you encounter a surface as nice as this, one rethinks priorities.

Of note: come late March/early April, all bets are OFF. Destroy the snow!!!! But it’s February, in New England… better bring the snowshoes.
