Beautiful Day. Started at the upper parking lot at the Castle in the Clouds property. All of the trails I travelled had received minimal or no use since the storm earlier this week with the exception of the section of the High Ridge used by snowmobiles and the Settlement Trail (which is groomed for XC skiing). The Upper Bridal, Oak Ridge Cutoff and High Ridge before the Turtleback Mountain junction had not seen any recent foot traffic. In most places there was a faint old snowshoe track, in others the trail was totally obscured by the last storm but could be carefully followed via the excellent blazing. The surface on all of these trails was a breakable crust over a deep powder base. I wore snowshoes the entire trip. NONE of the trails I traveled are currently suitable for bare booting/micro spikes. I don't know where the people were heading, but as I was leaving the parking lot there was a large group (about ten) leaving the parking lot and no one in the group had snowshoes. I didn't see anyone while I was out on the trails. |
