Trail had several inches of new snow. Previous trench visible most of the way but not at the ledges and a few other areas - due to drifting. Snow is super soft and not well consolidated. Will need snowshoes over the next couple of days and then it should harden over the weekend.
Four of us started in snowshoes to break out the trench: 3 NH-ites and one VT’er. On the descent, ran into 2 hikers at the ledges, both with snowshoes - from MA. Just one barebooter out there today - Gorham, NH resident, seasoned hiker, and trail steward for one of the Presidential trails.
MORAL OF THE STORY: you don’t have to be an out-of-stater or novice to be a barebooter/microspiker when snowshoes really should be used. Everybody does it! |
