Comments
Comments: You'll see all the snow conditions out there! Falling Waters got progressively less packed as we ascended; thought snowshoes were silly at first but found them essential from before Shining Rock to summit of Haystack mostly for the heel lifts adding the extra oomf in traction on the steeps (and avoiding kick-stepping in 'spikes that doesn't work too well). By this coming weekend (without new snow), it should be a cement sidewalk for fast 'spikes-only ascents. Snowshoes were useless on the exposed rock and ice from Haystack to Lincoln aside from a couple short thigh-deep drifts. Lincoln to Lafayette had many more drifts to contend with; snowshoes would've been helpful to put back on but increasing winds and negative degree windchill urged us to not stop and continue through. Sometimes we crawled and had a blast laughing at ourselves. Adventure! Descending Greenleaf to the hut in snowshoes could've been a better choice than 'spikes as well but the stiff, wind beaten snow ahead was bare boot chewed already and snagging rock patches could've been an ankle breaking in the making. Bridle Path is good for any foot wear; well-packed and don't let the elitist snowshoers too eager to share their opinion and ruin a peaceful mountain top convince you otherwise. Also, can everyone stop judging others' foot wear while out enjoying the woods? The worst winter trail conditions are still easier than most of what we see in the warm season...and your privilege is showing.
