This hike was 5.5 mile out & back to Holt Peak from TH on Temple Road hiking northbound from trailhead on Temple Road. Recent rain, sleet, and trace snow worked to consolidate the snow and flash freeze fixed it in place. Fortunately Wapack Trail from Temple Road was nicely packed before this storm event and flash freeze solidified excellent footing. I wore Hillsound Trail Crampons, but bare boot would have been ok. The climb up ridge begins immediately and is gradual enough and punctuated by periodic view ledges making for delightful excursion. The trees were coated with ice which sparkled in the sun. Fortunately icing was not heavy enough to damage the trees. Burton Peak has view ledge offers fine view of Mt Monadnock. Ups and downs on ridge between Burton and Holt were mellow. Picturesque stonewalls line the trail for much of he way add charm. |
